01

Mental & physical conditioning

Expedition fatigue does not arrive as sudden exhaustion; it slips in as insidious micro-decisions — a skipped hydration stop, a rushed line choice at dusk.

Build load tolerance before you leave: long days in the saddle with full luggage, and deliberate practice of the recovery routine you will actually use.

Field checks

  • checkRide three consecutive 400 km days with full kit
  • checkFixed hydration and nutrition schedule, tested in heat
  • checkSleep protocol for 17-hour daylight windows
02

Motorcycle selection & fortification

The biggest mistake aspiring round-the-world riders make is buying for the fantasy rather than the failure mode: the bike you can lift, fix and find parts for wins.

Fortify before you decorate — protection first, then luggage, then comfort.

Field checks

  • checkCrash bars, skid plate, radiator and headlight guards
  • checkTubeless spoked rims or heavy-duty tubes
  • checkChain and sprocket life checked against total distance
03

Route mapping & border telemetry

Never rely solely on a single smartphone or cellular routing engine. Carry offline vector maps, a paper fallback and a satellite messenger.

Border telemetry matters as much as the track: opening hours, temporary import paperwork and fuel gaps decide the day.

Field checks

  • checkOffline GPX plus paper map of every remote stage
  • checkFuel range buffer of 150 km beyond the longest gap
  • checkCustoms and temporary import documents pre-filled
04

Critical spare parts & tool roll

Perform your full pre-departure maintenance — wheels off, brake pads changed, every fastener torqued — so the tools you carry have already been proven.

Weight beats completeness: carry what fails, not what might.

Field checks

  • checkLevers, cables, fuses, master link, tyre repair kit
  • checkTorque wrench, tyre irons, bead breaker
  • checkSpare fasteners sorted by size, not by origin
05

Satellite comms & medical protocols

When riding solo beyond cellular coverage, the interval between injury and rescue is the only variable you control. Automate the alarm and rehearse the response.

A documented medical card, evacuation insurance and a check-in cadence turn a crisis into a procedure.

Field checks

  • checkSatellite messenger with 10-minute tracking
  • checkEvacuation insurance covering motorcycle travel
  • checkPrinted medical card and emergency contacts
